Proprioseiopsis View in CoL . — Moraes et al., 1986: 111, 2004b: 170; Chant & McMurtry, 2005a: 9, 2007: 87.
Type species. Typhlodromus (Amblyseius) terrestris Chant, 1959: 103 .
Main distinguishing characteristics. Usually brownish to reddish. Dorsal shield varying from smooth to reticulate; usually broad and covering the whole dorsum of idiosoma. Idiosomal setal pattern 10A:8E/JV-3:ZV (J2 absent); setae j1, j3, s4 and (mainly) Z4 and Z5 distinctly longer than other setae, but none whip-shaped (in some species, z2 and/ or z4 about as long as j3); ratios s4 / Z1 and s4 / S2>3.0. Ventral shields usually broader than in other genera. Sternal shield varying from longer than wide to wider than long. Ventrianal shield usually shield-shaped or pentagonal; bowl-shaped in a few species. Spermatheca saccular, bell-, cup-, disc- or trumpet-shaped; some species with atrium bifurcate/vacuolate at juncture with major duct. Fixed and movable cheliceral digits 3–16 and 0–3 teeth, respectively. Macrosetae present on legs II–IV, and in some species also on genu I, but not on tibia I; all sharp-tipped. Male ventrianal shield usually with three pairs of pre-anal setae arranged in a triangular patter (occasionally with 4–6 pairs); spermadactyl of the type heel-and-toe or T-shaped .
Remarks. Eleven of the 146 species presently included in this genus have been reported from Brazil. The most frequently reported are P. dominigos and P. neotropicus , followed by P. mexicanus . Worldwide, species of the genus have been most commonly reported from plants, but quite often from soil.
