Pempheris oualensis Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1831 —Copper sweeper, bronze sweeper STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed at St. CTR 33. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East and South Africa to Line and Marquesas islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Rottnest Island (Western Australia), Queensland ( Australia), Lord Howe Island and Rapa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes. Found in large schools under overhanging corals and in caves of lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 1– 36 m. Marine.

Pempheris schwenkii Bleeker, 1855 —Silver sweeper

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 21, CTR 22, CTR 32, CTR 33.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East Africa and western Mascarenes east to Caroline Islands and Tonga, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in coral and rocky reefs, hiding in caves during the day; also entering estuaries and freshwater streams, 0– 40 m. Freshwater, transitional water, and marine.

Pempheris vanicolensis Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1831 —Vanikoro sweeper

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on a specimen photographed by P. Laboute on 28 Nov. 2012, and another by A. Berberian. CAS material (CAS 65608).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East Africa east to Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Found in coral and rocky reefs, hiding in caves during the day; also entering estuaries and freshwater streams, 1– 25 m. Marine.

Pempheris sp. —Black-edged sweeper

STATUS AT MADANG. Recorded from Madang, based on a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen, St. PR 221; another photographed by A. Berberian. NTUM material. This is apparently an undescribed species, related to P. mangula .

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Western Pacific Ocean. Found in large schools under overhanging corals and in caves of lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 1– 20 m. Marine.
