Diagnosis: A genus of Empididae distinguished from other genera of Hemerodromiinae by a combination of the following characters: (1) head with distinct postocular setae; (2) postpedicel usually longer than broad and with longer arista, if postpedicel about as long as broad then arista obviously much longer [the arista is sometimes very short or absent but in such cases the postpedicel is considerably lengthened]; (3) laterotergite with setae; (4) thorax strongly arched below, in lateral view, vertical distance between lower corner of katepisternum and a hypothetical mid line extrapolated posteriorly from base of front coxa equal or slightly less than distance between mid line and top of scutum; (5) scutum with distinct setae; (6) male genitalia reflexed anterodorsally, often distinctly so; (7) cell dm closed, crossvein dm-cu present; (8) cell cup (when present) as long as or slightly longer than cell bm; (9) cell cup apically rounded (CuA 2 evenly recurrent.- C. modicagroup ) or posteroapically pointed ( C. consignata -group & C. trepida -group); (10) CuA 2 not extending to posterior margin of wing;

The genus Chelipoda is readily recognised using the keys of Collin (1928, 1961) or Steyskal & Knutson (1981). New Zealand Chelipoda are rather structurally diverse, particularly in regard of males which frequently exhibit extreme development of secondary characters which do not always fit well with current definitions of the genus. The phylogenetic relationships of species currently assigned to Chelipoda will be discussed later.
