Type Locality: Panama, Darién, Río Tuyra, Marragantí.
Vernacular Names: Lesser Capybara.
Distribution: Panama, W Colombia and W Venezuela.
Conservation: Uncommon in Panama.
Discussion: Included in hydrocharis by Handley (1966 a:785) but Mones (1991) recognized as a distinct species. Karyotype has 2n=64 and FN=104.
