TYPE LOCALITY: Venezuela, Bolivar, Caura Valley, La Union .

DISTRIBUTION: Venezuela along the Orinoco River from the Colombian border to Cuidad Bolivar; perhaps adjacent Colombia.

COMMENT: Subgenus Hadrosciurus ; see Cabrera, 1961:374. Moore, 1959, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 118: 153-206, considered flammifer to be in the subgenus Hadrosciurus of genus Guerlinguetus .
