ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 47.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Patria Ignota [Country unknown]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 specimen, syntype (sex not determinable, completely covered with mold, missing terminalia and antennae) ( MZUN: Box Asilidei A 05, 05): Mallophora pyrura Rnd., Amer. mer. [= South America ] / M. Zool. N° 11047 .

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Martin & Papavero 1970: 75); junior synonym of Mallophora ruficauda ( Wiedemann, 1828) View in CoL ( Artigas & Angulo 1980: 100, Papavero 2009: 42).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 47) described Mallophora pyrura , without specifying the number , the sex or the length of the specimens, from material received from M. Spinola. Costa (1866: 36) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “801”. Artigas & Angulo (1980: 100) incorrectly concluded that the type of this nominal species had presumably been lost. We also found one syntype in this study.
