Agromyza cirsi Rondani, 1875 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1875b: 177 (key, as cirsi View in CoL ), 180 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ In Svecia meridionali …; in Scania ad Lund & Esperöd …; in Ostrogothia ad Gusum & in Uplandia ad Holmiam … [Southern Sweden …; Scania in Lund and Äsperöd …; Östergötland in Gusum and Uplandia in Stockholm]” ( Zetterstedt 1848: 2778) [localities for Agromyza pulicaria Meigen, 1830 sensu Zetterstedt (1848) ]; Schiner (1863) gave no locality in his redescription of Agromyza pulicaria Meigen, 1830 , but presumably it is Austria or Germany because the work deals with Austrian and German species; “ in collibus agri parmensis [Parmese hills ( Italy)]” (Rondani 1875: 180) [type locality for Agromyza cirsi Rondani, 1875 ].

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype (puparium pinned below specimen) ( MZUF: Box 35): Agromyza Fall. / cirsii Rndn. / 1843; 1 ♀, syntype (slightly covered with mold) ( MZLU: Box 44): 198 a. Agromyza Fall. / [blue label] / A. pulicaria ♀ Esperöd [= Äsperöd] / Melanagromyza ? longilingua Hend Rydén det. / Type no. 6675.2; 1 ♀, syntype (missing head) ( MZLU: Box 44): 198 a. Agromyza Fall. / Scan. [= Scania ( Sweden)] / Melanagromyza ? cunctans Meig. Rydén det. / Type no. 6675.3.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Melanagromyza aeneoventris (Fallén, 1823) ( Papp 1984b: 277) View in CoL .

REMARKS: Rondani (1875b: 180) proposed Agromyza cirsi for Agromyza pulicaria Meigen, 1830 sensu Zetterstedt (1848: 2778) and sensu Schiner (1863: 304), which he considered a new species. Rondani referred to Zetterstedt’s and Schiner’s redescriptions of Agromyza pulicaria , which were based on an unspecified number of specimens, and to an unspecified number of specimens in his collection. Therefore, the type material is in the collections of Zetterstedt (MZLU), Schiner (NHMW) and Rondani (MZUF). No specimen labeled as Agromyza pulicaria is present in Schiner’s collection in the NHMW (P. Sehnal, pers. comm., September 2019). Three syntypes were found in this study. Rondani named the species as “ cirsi ” in his key (p. 177) and as “ cirsii ” in his description (p. 180) and index (p. 190). Becker (1905: 242) and Papp (1984b: 277) both used the name “ cirsii ”. O’Hara et al. (2011: 208), acting as First Revisers (according to I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 24.2.3), determined “ cirsi ” as the correct original spelling and considered “ cirsii” (as “ circii”, an incorrect subsequent spelling) as the incorrect original spelling.
