status

Ornithomyia andajensis Rondani, 1878

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1878a: 155.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Andai in Nova Guinea [Andai, New Guinea]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, holotype ( MSNG): N. Guinea, Andai, XII.1875, Beccari / Typus / Ornithomyia andaiensis Rnd. / andaiensis [sic!] Rndn. / Ornithomyia andaiensis [sic!] Rndn., Typus! / Ornitheza metallica Schin. (= andaiensis [sic!] Rndn.), ♀, T. C. Maa, [19]62.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Ornithophila metallica Schiner, 1864 ( Maa 1989a: 788).

REMARKS: Rondani (1878a: 155) described Ornithomyia andajensis from a single specimen, without specifying its sex: “ Unicum exemplar vidi lectum … a Cel. O. Beccari [I saw a single specimen … collected by Mr. O. Beccari]”. This nominal species was described under the generic name “ Ornithomyia ”, which is an “incorrect subsequent spelling of Ornithomya Latreille, 1804 or subsequent usage of Ornithomyia Agassiz, 1846 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 133).
