ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1872a: 31.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Italia [ Italy]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 57): Culex Lin. / penicillaris Rndn. / 3020.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Aedes caspius (Pallas, 1771) View in CoL ( Minář 1991: 94, Harbach 2018: 101).

REMARKS: Rondani (1872a: 31) included Culex penicillaris as a new species in a key but did not provide a detailed description, number or length of the specimens but provided specific characters for the male. Two syntypes were found in this study.
