ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 58 (key), 59 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Chiliae [ Chile]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, holotype ( MZUN: Box Antracidei A 03,01): Hyperalonia chilensis Rnd. , Chili [= Chile] / M. Zool. N° 11118 .

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Evenhuis & Greathead 1999: 400, 2015: 414).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 59) described Hyperalonia chilensis , without specifying the number , the sex or the length of the specimens, from material received from R.A. Philippi. Costa (1866: 37) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “824”. Evenhuis & Greathead (1999: 400) reported the specimen in the MZUN to be a holotype. O’Hara et al. (2011: 208) incorrectly considered this nominal species under the generic name Exoprosopa Macquart, 1840 .
