ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 66.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Chiliae [ Chile]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, holotype (very moldy) ( MZUN: Box Bombilidei B 03, 03): Phtyria philippiana Rnd , Chili [= Chile] / M. Zool. N° 11107 .

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Poecilognathus philippianus View in CoL ( Evenhuis & Greathead 1999: 32, 2015: 34).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 66) described Phtyria philippiana , without specifying either the number or the sex of the specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from R.A. Philippi. Costa (1866: 37) listed a single MZUN specimen (as Phthiria ) numbered “856”. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name Phtyria , which is an “unjustified emendation of Phthiria Meigen, 1803 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 144). Evenhuis & Greathead (1999: 32) reported the specimen in the MZUN to be a holotype.
