This neotropical family of acalyptrate flies contains 32 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1848b) described three nominal species from South America in his “ Familia Muscinae ”, all considered as junior synonyms ( Steyskal 1967b; Prado & Papavero 2009). The family Ropalomeridae was proposed by Schiner (1868). The type material of all three nominal species is in the MZUN.
