This worldwide family of Bibionomorpha flies contains 4,740 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). In his Prodromus of Diptera genera Rondani (1856) described, without providing any detailed descriptions, seven Palaearctic nominal species. Six are currently considered as doubtful ( Hackman et al. 1988, P. Chandler, per. comm. 2013, Evenhuis & Pape 2020) and one is not included in any catalog. The type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is in the MZUF.
