This family, proposed by Melander in 1902, contains 421 predominantly Nearctic and Palaearctic species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020) and is considered to be the sister group of Bombyliidae ( Marshall 2012) . Zaitzev (1989) and Pape et al. (2011) considered it as a subfamily of Bombyliidae . Rondani (1863) described two Palaearctic species in Mythicomyiidae , both considered as valid ( Zaitzev 1989, Contini et al. 1995, Evenhuis 2002). The type material was not found in this study and is presumed lost.
