TYPE LOCALITY: “ in tota Italia [in all Italy]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 26): Caricea Desv. / leonina Rnd. , ♂ / 1390; 3 ♀♀, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 26): Caricea Desv. / leonina Rnd. , ♀ / 1390; 2 ♀♀, syntypes (one glued to a cardboard stage, missing both mid-legs) ( OUMNH General Collection: Box 158.5): syntype / Type / C. leonina Ex. Coll. Big. / C. leonine [sic!] ♂ Europe, Rond.; 1 ♀, syntype ( OUMNH General Collection: Box 158.5): syntype / Typ. Rd leonin. / sec. typ. Rondanii / C. leonina Ex. Coll. CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Coenosia tigrina ( Fabricius, 1775) View in CoL ( Pont 1986b: 213, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 16).

REMARKS: Rondani (1877c: 275) described Caricea leonina without specifying the number , the sex or the length of the specimens but from more than one specimen: “ in individuis plurimis specie observatur [observed in some specimens of the species]”. We found eight syntypes in this study. An additional four specimens numbered “1390” in the MZUF are not included in the type series because their labels are yellowish rather than the greenish color of Rondani’s original handwritten ones and are in a lower row in the Box, for which reason we treat them to be subsequent additions .
