ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1871a: 333.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Etruria [ Etruria (= Tuscany, Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Caricea verna ( Fabricius, 1794) ( Pont 1986b: 195) View in CoL ; junior synonym of Lispocephala verna (Fabricius, 1784) ( Gorodkov et al. 1995: 15) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1871a: 333) described Caricea pantherina from just the female sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens: “ Foeminam obtinui in Etruria lectam a Piccioli [I received the female from Etruria collected by Piccioli]”. We were unable to locate any type material of this nominal species in our study. There is a (non-type) female from “ Parma ” in the MZUF.
