ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 209 (key), 211 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in insula Melita [ Malta Island]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, holotype ( MZUF: Box 26): Lispe Latr. / melitensis Rnd. , Melita / 1394.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Lispe nana Macquart, 1835 ( Pont 1986b: 188) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 211) described Lispa melitensis from a single female: “ Foeminam unicam possideo a doct. Schembri missam [I have a single female, sent by Dr. Schembri]”, received from A. Schembri. Hennig (1961: 229) incorrectly listed two MRSN males as syntypes (whereas the original description refers to the female sex only), and did not mention the MZUF female, which is the holotype. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Lispa ”, which is an “incorrect subsequent spelling of Lispe Latreille, 1797 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 106).
