ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 181 (as Spyloptera View in CoL ); 223 (as Spiloptera ).
TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but presumably it is Italy because the work deals with Italian species .
TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.
CURRENT STATUS: doubtful species of Limoniidae ( Savchenko et al. 1992: 369) View in CoL .
REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 181) key for the genus Spyloptera Rondani, 1856 lists Spyloptera meridionalis as its type species, but he did not provide a detailed description, type locality, number or sex of the specimens. Rondani (1856) named this genus as Spyloptera (p. 181) in his key but as Spiloptera in the index (p. 223). Acting as First Revisers (according to I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 24.2.3), O’Hara et al. (2011: 171) determined “ Spyloptera ” as the correct original spelling. We could not locate any type specimens of this nominal species during our study.
