ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1871a: 318.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Alpibus … prope Varallum [ Alps … near Varallo (= Vercelli, Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♀♀, syntypes (one covered with mold) ( MZUF: Box 22): Aspilia Rnd. / alpestris Rnd., Varallo, Alpi / 1167.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Phaonia angelicae ( Scopoli, 1763) View in CoL ( Pont 1986b: 117, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 12).
REMARKS: Rondani (1871a: 318) described Aspilia alpestris from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens: “ legi specimina aliqua foeminea [I collected some female specimens]”. He later ( Rondani 1877c: 87) reported two females: “ Mas ignotus . Faeminas duas alpinas possideo [Male unknown. I have two females from the Alps]”.
