ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 85 (key), 90 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus ditionis parmensis . … In Etruria [Parmese hills. … Etruria (= Tuscany) ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂ (only one of them is a syntype but is not labeled as such) (one with terminalia in a microvial pinned below specimen) ( MZUF: Box 4) with the following labels: Eumerus Mgn / melanopus Rndn. / 130 / Eumerus amoenus Lw. , ♂, det. Doczkal, 1995.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Eumerus strigatus ( Fallén, 1817) View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 163, Belcari et al. 1995a: 16).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 90) described Eumerus melanopus from one male and an unspecified number of females: “ Semel exemplar masculum … inveni. Foeminam in Etruria captam a D. Piccioli accepi [Once I found a male specimen … I received the female collected in Etruria by Dr. Piccioli]”. Only one of the two MZUF males belongs to the type series because Rondani mentioned just one male in his original description. These males did not have any label indicating their type status. We are unable to single out the male upon which Rondani based his description. We leave the recognition of the male syntype to a future specialist. Not included in the type series is an additional male in the MSNPV from “ Etruria (= Tuscany)”, which is not the male type locality. No female type material was found in this study and is presumed lost .
