ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 54 (key), 63 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in apennino Parmensi in Pedemontio [ Parmese Apennines … Piedmont ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUF: Box 2): Merodon Fb. Latr. / constans Rossi montanus Rnd., Apenn. [= Apennines] / 62 / Merodon constans Rossi det. Hurkmans, 1987; 1 specimen, syntype (sex not determinable, abdomen partially eaten by dermestids) ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Merodon montanus Rnd. 369 Apenn. [= Apennines] / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 5, posiz. A-3 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci ( PI) ex collezione Rondani.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Merodon constans (Rossi, 1794) View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 169, Belcari et al. 1995a: 16).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 63) described both sexes of Merodon montanus from two females and an unspecified number of males: “ Foeminas duas legi … in apennino Parmensi. Mas rarissimo in Pedemontio lectus a Bellardi [I collected two females in Parmensi Apennines … The male, very uncommon, collected in Piedmont by Bellardi]”. We found two syntypes. Not included in the type series are an additional two males, one each in the MZUF and MSNPV, from “Apenn.” [= Apennines], which is not the type locality for the male .
