ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1850c: 190.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Venezuela ” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype ( MRSN: Box 1754): Sargus claviventris Rond. , Venezuela, ♀. / Museo di Zoologia della Università Torino, Italia; 1 specimen, syntype (completely covered with mold, probably a female) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Stratiomidei - Gen. Clitellaria a Sternobrithes ): Sargus claviventris Rnd. , Venezuela / M. Zool. N° 10984.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( James 1973: 19, Woodley 2001: 222).

REMARKS: Rondani (1850c: 190) described Sargus claviventris from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, despite there being two specimens in the type series found in this study, from material received from E. Truqui. Costa (1866: 38) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “869”. We consider the two specimens as syntypes.
