ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 76.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Madagascar ” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (missing antennae) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Stratiomidei - Gen. Clitellaria a Sternobrithes ): Sargus lateritius Rnd. , Madagascar / M. Zool. N° 10985.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( James 1980: 257, Woodley 2001: 226).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 76) described Sargus lateritius from just the male sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens, from material received from M. Spinola. Costa (1866: 38) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “870”. We also found one syntype in this study.
