ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866b: 28 (key), 30 (description) [1867b: 112 (key), 114 (description)].

TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but presumably it is Italy because the work deals with Italian species .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUF: Box 27): Scatina Desv. / fontanalis Rndn. , Parma / 1440.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Scathophaga fontanalis ( Gorodkov 1986: 31, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 4).

REMARKS: Rondani (1866b: 30) described Scatina fontanalis from just the female sex without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens: “ Foeminas aliquas tantum legi [I collected only some females]”, publishing the species first in a separate (1866b) and then in the journal version (1867b). Gorodkov (1986: 31) and Gorodkov et al. (1995: 4) incorrectly spelled this nominal species as ‘ fontinalis ’. We found one syntype in this study. Three MZUF specimens, all numbered “1440” are not included in the type series: two males because of their sex, and a female because its label is yellowish rather than the greenish color of Rondani’s original handwritten ones and is in a lower row in the Box, for which reason we treat it to be a subsequent addition.
