ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1880: 9 (key), 10 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ De France et d’Allemagne [ France and Germany]” ( Macquart 1835: 566) [locality for Borborus nitidus Meigen, 1830 sensu Macquart (1835) ]; “ Scandinaviam meridionalem & mediam …; in Scania ad Abusa, Esperöd, Widtsköfle; in Smolandia …; in Ostrogothia ad Gusum, Wadstena, Lärketorp; in Jemtlandia ad Hofverberget; in Dania [southern and central Scandinavia … Scania in Abusa, Äsperöd, Vittskövle; Småland; Östergötland in Gusum, Vadstena, Lärketorp; Jämtland in Hofverberget; Denmark]” ( Zetterstedt 1847: 2476) [localities for Copromyza nitida (Meigen, 1830) sensu Zetterstedt (1847) ]; “ Sueciae meridionali set mediae, Scaniae, Smolandiae, Ostrogothiae, Uplandiae, … in Jemtlandia [southern and central Sweden, Scania, Småland, Östergötland, Uplandia, … Jämtland]” ( Stenhammar 1853: 325) [localities for Copromyza nitida (Meigen, 1830) sensu Stenhammar (1853) ]; Schiner (1863) gave no locality in his redescription of Borborus nitidus Meigen, 1830 , but presumably it is Austria and Germany because the work deals with Austrian and German species; “ In apennino Italiae superioris [northern Italian Apennines ( Italy)]” ( Rondani 1880: 10) [type locality for Borborus nigriceps Rondani, 1880 ].

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Copromyza nitida (Meigen, 1830) ( Papp 1984d: 78) View in CoL ; junior synonym of Crumomyia nitida (Meigen, 1830) View in CoL ( Norrbom & Kim 1986: 34, Norrbom et al. 2001: 63).

REMARKS: Rondani (1880: 10) proposed Borborus nigriceps for Borborus nitidus Meigen, 1830 sensu Macquart (1835: 566) , Copromyza nitida (Meigen, 1830) sensu Zetterstedt (1847: 2476) , Copromyza nitida (Meigen, 1830) sensu Stenhammar (1853: 325) and Borborus nitidus Meigen, 1830 sensu Schiner (1863: 323) , which he considered a new species. Rondani referred to Macquart’s, Zetterstedt’s, Stenhammar’s and Schiner’s redescriptions of Borborus nitidus , which were based on an unspecified number of specimens, and to an unspecified number of specimens in his collection (he surely had the male sex because he included a differential character for the male). Therefore, the type material should be in the collections of Macquart (MNHN, OUMNH, MHNL), Zetterstedt (MZLU), Stenhammar (ZIUU), Schiner (NHMW) and Rondani. No specimen labeled Borborus nitidus is preserved in the MHNL (O. Boilly, pers. comm., May 2019), MNHN (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020), or OUMNH (Z. Simmons, pers. comm., May 2019), where Macquart’s collection is preserved and in the NHMW (P. Sehnal, pers. comm., September 2019) where Schiner’s collection is preserved. Norrbom & Kim (1986: 34) designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotypes (1 ♂, 2 ♀♀) but did not mention an additional 11 specimens in the MZLU and four specimens in the ZIUU (all are paralectotypes).
