Megerlea caminaria var. fuliginaria Rondani, 1862 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1862d: 134.

TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but presumably it is Italy because the work deals with Italian species .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, 1 ♀, syntypes ( MZUF: Box F): Megerlea Des. caminaria Mgn , 381, ♂ ♀, Parma / 393 381 .

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Nyctia halterata (Panzer, 1798) View in CoL ( Verves 1986: 116, Pape 1988: 8, 1996: 167).

REMARKS: Rondani (1862d: 134) described Megerlea fuliginaria as a variety of Megerlea caminaria ( Meigen, 1826) without specifying the number , the sex or the length of the specimens. Pape (1988: 8) stated: “No types have been located in the Rondani collection, and the original material may be mixed with Rondani’s material of either caminaria Meigen , maura Fabricius or halterata Panzer , which all are conspecific”. We did not find any specimen under the name Megerlea fuliginaria , but we found one male and one female under the name Megerlea caminaria that fits Rondani’s description. We consider these two specimens as the syntypes of Megerlea fuliginaria . Under the name Megerlea caminaria in the MSNC, there is one male and one female whose poor condition do not allow us to conclude whether or not they fit Rondani’s description of Megerlea caminaria .
