ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 78.

TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but later (1861c: 277) added “ in Italia media [central Italy]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUF: Box 16): Exogaster Rnd. / carinatus Rnd. / 875; 1 ♀, syntype (missing left hind-leg) ( MZUF: Box 16): Exogaster Rnd. / carinatus Rnd., Etrur. [= Etruria (Tuscany) ] / 875; 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUF: Box C): Exogaster R. carinatus R., 318, Apenn. [= Apennines] / 393 318; 1 specimen, syntype (sex not determinable, missing abdomen) ( MSNPV: Box 98): Exogaster Rnd. carinatus R., 426, Parma .

CURRENT STATUS: junior secondary homonym of Ocyptera carinata Loew, 1845 and junior synonym of Cylindromyia rufifrons ( Loew, 1844) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 427) .

REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 78) key for the genus Exogaster Rondani, 1856 lists Exogaster carinatus as its type species, giving a range of lengths but no detailed description, type locality, number or sex of the specimens. We found four syntypes in this study
