Exorista fugax Rondani, 1859 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1859b: 116 (key), 127 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in planitie ditionis Parmensis [Parmese plains ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♀♀ (one of them is surely the holotype but is not labeled as such; one covered with mold, missing left fore- and right mid-legs) ( MZUF: Box 13) with the following labels: Exorista Mgn / fugax Rnd. / 623.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Drino lota ( Meigen, 1824) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 208) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 127) described Exorista fugax from a single female: “ Semel exemplar foemineum inveni [Once I found a female specimen]”. Herting (1969: 194) stated: “The Rondani collection contains three different species under this name. The only specimen that agrees with the description is a female of Drino lota Meigen , and this is obviously the type”. Unfortunately, he did not label the specimen he considered as the “type”. There are two females in the MZUF without any label indicating their type status: we are unable to single out the one upon which Rondani based his description. We leave the recognition of the holotype to a future specialist.
