CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Peleteria varia ( Fabricius, 1794) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 279) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 61) described Ciphocera pyrrogaster from seven females: “ foeminas septem inveni [I found seven females]”. We found six females in the MZUF, one in the MSNC, one in the MSNPV and two in the OUMNH: these specimens did not have any label indicating their type status. We are unable to single out the seven females upon which Rondani based his description. We leave the recognition of the seven female syntypes to a future specialist. Two MZUF males numbered “503” are not included in the type series because of their sex. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Ciphocera ”, which is an “incorrect subsequent spelling of Cuphocera Macquart, 1845 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 68).
