ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1865a: 128.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Apennino [ Apennines ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Volucella bombylans (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Peck 1988: 129) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1865a: 128) described Volucella spuria from just the male sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens. We did not locate any type specimens of this nominal species in our study. There are two males (non-types) from the “ Alpi ” [Alps] in the MZUF (Box 1).
