ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 4.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ America merid. [South America]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra, Fam. Sirfidei - Gen. Aphritis a Phalacromya ): Volucella transatlantica Rnd., Amer. mer. [= South America] / M. Zool. N° 11205 / ♂; 1 ♀, syntype (covered with mold) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra, Fam. Sirfidei - Gen. Aphritis a Phalacromya ): ♀.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Copestylum dispar ( Macquart, 1846) ( Thompson et al. 1976: 75) View in CoL .

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 4) described Volucella transatlantica , providing specific characters for the male and female, from an unspecified number of specimens received from M. Spinola. Costa (1866: 31) listed two MZUN specimens numbered “615”. We also found two syntypes in this study.
