REMARKS: preoccupied by Macquart 1829; name that Rondani (1844b: 198) proposed as a synonym of Ferdinandea aurea Rondani, 1844 and was not made available by use as a valid species before 1961. Verrall (1901: 108), Bezzi & Stein (1907: 138), Kertész (1910: 322), Sack (1932: 419) and Peck (1988: 122) considered Cheilosia nigricornis as a “ nomen nudum published in synonymy with Ferdinandea cuprea ”. O’Hara et al. (2011: 211) incorrectly considered the name as available.
