ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1875c: 459.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Insula Bonae Fortunae (Borneo) , Provincia Sarawak [ Bona Fortuna Island , Sarawak Province, Borneo]” ( Rondani 1875c: 421) .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, holotype ( MSNG): Sarawak / typus / apicalis Rond. / Tabanus apicalis n° 71.

CURRENT STATUS: junior primary homonym of Tabanus apicalis Macquart, 1847 and senior (but invalid) synonym of Tabanus borniensis Ricardo, 1911 ( Stone 1975: 55) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1875c: 459) described Tabanus apicalis from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material collected by G. Doria and O. Beccari. Ricardo (1911: 216) examined the type in the MSNG and replaced Tabanus apicalis Rondani, 1875 , name already used by Wiedemann (1828: 142), with Tabanus borniensis . Guiglia (1957: 196) and Raineri & Rey (1996: 54) reported the holotype (♀) in the MSNG.
