ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 83.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ aus Brasilien [ Brazil]” ( Wiedemann 1830: 623)] [type locality for Silvius esenbeckii Wiedemann, 1830 ].

CURRENT STATUS: unjustified new name for Esenbeckia esenbeckii ( Wiedemann, 1830) ( Wilkerson & Fairchild 1983: 537) ; junior synonym of Esenbeckia esenbeckii ( Wiedemann, 1830) ( Fairchild 1971: 7, Coscarón & Papavero 2009: 23).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 83) proposed Esenbeckia as a new genus and identified Silvius esenbeckii Wiedemann, 1830 as the type species. Having used the epithet for the new nominal genus and thinking that the name Esenbeckia esenbeckii was incorrect, Rondani erroneously substituted it with Esenbeckia pangonina . Kertész (1908: 180), Lutz (1909: 669), Fairchild (1971: 7) and Wilkerson & Fairchild (1983: 537) placed this name in synonymy with Esenbeckia esenbeckii while Lynch-Arribálzaga (1882: 131) and Ricardo (1901: 297) treated it as a valid species. The type material for Esenbeckia pangonina will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Silvius esenbeckii . The type material of this latter species is preserved in the NHMW ( Fairchild 1967: 84). O’Hara et al. (2011: 83) selected Esenbeckia as the correct original spelling and considered Esenbekia as an unavailable name.
