ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 111 (key), 115 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Parmae [ Parma (Italy) ]”.
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, holotype ( MZUF: Box 4): Sphaerophoria Lep. Serv. / serpilli Rnd. / 177 / = Sphaerophoria rueppelli Wied. , det. P. Goeldlin.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Sphaerophoria rueppelli ( Wiedemann, 1830) ( Peck 1988: 45) .
REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 115) described Sphaerophoria serpilli from a single male: “ unico specimine masculo [a single male specimen]”.
