ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 179 (key), 183 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in colle sub apennino ditionis parmensis [ Parmese sub-Apennine hill ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (missing right fore-leg) ( MZUF: Box 6): Pipiza Mgn / vidua Rnd. , ♂ / 323.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Pipiza noctiluca (Linnaeus, 1758) View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 88, Belcari et al. 1995a: 11).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 183) described Pipiza vidua from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length: “ mas speciei semel a me inventus [I found the male of the species once]”. We found one syntype in this study.
