ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 126 (key), 133 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus subapenninis agri parmensi [Parmese sub-Apennine hills ( Italy)]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, lectotype (terminalia in a microvial pinned below specimen) ( MZUF: Box 5): Syrphus Fabr. / flaviceps Rnd. / 216 / Lectotypus Syrphus flaviceps Rondani, Dušek & Láska, 1974 / Metasyrphus flaviceps (Rnd.) det. M. Daccordi, 1985.

PARALECTOTYPE EXAMINED: 1 ♀ ( MZUF: Box 5): Syrphus Fabr. / flaviceps Rnd. / 216 / Paralectotypus Syrphus flaviceps Rondani, Dušek & Láska, 1974 / E. bucculatus det. Mazánek et Láska, 2003.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Eupeodes flaviceps View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 33, Belcari et al. 1995a: 7).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 133) described both sexes of Syrphus flaviceps without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length. Dušek & Láska (1976: 274) designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotype (♀) but did not mention an additional eight specimens: six in the MZUF, one in the MSNC and one in the MSNPV (all are paralectotypes).
