ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863:12.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Amer. meridion. [ South America ]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype (completely covered with mold) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Sirfidei - Gen. Xylota a Conops ): Syrphus plurimaculatus Rnd. , Chili [= Chile]” “M. Zool. N° 11264 / ♀.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Thompson et al. 1976: 39).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 12) described Syrphus plurimaculatus from just the female sex, giving a single measurement of length, from material received from M. Fairmaire. Costa (1866: 32) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “648”. We also found one syntype in this study.
