ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1871b: 11 (key), 21 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Sicilia [Sicily ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, holotype (double-mounted: fastened by a micro pin to a polyethylene foam block on a standard insect pin, abdomen in a plastic vial pinned below specimen) ( MZUF: Box 32): Tephritis Latr. / obscuricornis Rnd., Sicil. / 1669 / holotype ♀, Tephritis Latr. obscuricornis Rondani , det. B. Merz, 1992 / Tephritis ? nigricaudata [sic!] (Loew), det. I.M. White, 1986.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Foote 1984: 131, Norrbom et al. 1999: 218).

REMARKS: Rondani (1871b: 21) described Tephritis obscuricornis from a single female: “ Foeminam unicam legit … D. Mina [sic!] Palumbo [Mr. Minà Palumbo collected a single female]”.
