ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 39.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Cap. B. Spei [Cape of Good Hope ( South Africa)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, holotype (covered with mold) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Tachinidei - Gen. Ceratoxis a Diopsis ) : Tephritis capensis Rnd., C. B. Sp. [= Caput Bonae Spei (Cape of Good Hope )] / M. Zool. N° 11452 / ♂ .

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, unplaced to genus of Tephritidae ( Cogan & Munro 1980: 536, Norrbom et al. 1999: 250).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 39) described Tephritis capensis from a single specimen: “ in specimine collictionis meae [in the specimen of my collection]” received from M. Spinola. Costa (1866: 34) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “731”.
