Tephritis siderata Rondani, 1868 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1868b: 31.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Brésil [ Brazil]” ( Macquart 1844: 384) [type locality for Acinia stellata Macquart, 1844 ].

TYPE MATERIAL: see Remarks.

CURRENT STATUS: unavailable name ( Norrbom et al. 1999: 159); not included in O’Hara et al. (2011); junior synonym of Hexacinia radiosa (Rondani,1868) (new synonymy, this work). See Remarks.

REMARKS: Macquart (1844: 384; 1851a: 266) described two different species under the same name, Acinia stellata . Rondani (1868b: 31) considered them as belonging to the genus Tephritis Latreille, 1804 , under which he also placed Musca stellata Fuesslin, 1775 , and proposed the substitute name Tephritis siderata for Acinia stellata Macquart, 1844 and the replacement name Tephritis radiosa for Acinia stellata Macquart, 1851 ( Rondani 1868b: 31) . Because the two species described by Fuesslin (1775) and Macquart (1844), respectively, did not belong to the same genus, Norrbom et al. (1999: 159) considered the name “ Tephritis siderata ” as unavailable and the name Tephritis radiosa as valid. We consider Tephritis siderata as an available name. The type material for Tephritis siderata Rondani, 1868 will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Acinia stellata Macquart, 1851 .A syntype of this latter species is preserved in the MNHN (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020). Acinia stellata Macquart, 1851 is currently considered a junior synonym of Hexacinia radiosa (Rondani, 1868) ( Norrbom et al. 1999: 159) , thus Tephritis siderata Rondani, 1868 is the same as Hexacinia radiosa (Rondani, 1868) , new synonymy.
