ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861e: 98 (key), 100 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in agro parmensi [ Parmese territory ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♀♀, syntypes (one missing left mid-leg, the other covered with mold, partially eaten by dermestids, missing mid- and right hind-legs) ( MZUF: Box 16): Phoricheta Rnd. / fuliginaria Rnd. / 835; 1 ♀, syntype ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Phoricheta R. fuliginaria R. 130 ♀ Parma / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 2, posiz. C-13 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci ( PI) ex collezione Rondani.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Periscepsia carbonaria (Panzer, 1798) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 379) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1861e: 100) described Phoricheta fuliginaria without specifying the number , the sex or the length of the specimens. We found three syntypes in this study. An additional MZUF female numbered “835” from “Sicil. [= Sicily]” is not included in the type series because it is not from the type locality.
