status

Hyalomyia tomentosa Rondani, 1868

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1868d: 603.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Sicilia [Sicily ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUF: Box 17): Hyalomyia Desv. / tomentosa Rnd., Sicil. / 931.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Phasia obesa (Fabricius, 1798) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 411) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1868d: 603) described Hyalomyia tomentosa from just the male sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens, from material received from F. Minà Palumbo. We found a male syntype in this study. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Hyalomyia ”, which is an “incorrect subsequent spelling of Hyalomya Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 or subsequent usage of Hyalomyia Macquart, 1834 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 98).
