ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1865c: 211.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus sub-apenninis [sub-Apennine hills ( Italy)]” ( Rondani, 1859b: 157) [type locality for Istocheta frontosa Rondani, 1859 ] .

CURRENT STATUS: unjustified substitute name for Istocheta frontosa Rondani, 1859 and junior synonym of Istocheta cinerea (Macquart, 1851) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 155) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1865c: 211) moved Tachina frontosa Meigen, 1824 to the genus Phorocera Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 and incorrectly proposed the new the substitute name Istocheta macrocheta for Istocheta frontosa Rondani, 1859 which, in his opinion, could be confused with Phorocera frontosa ( Meigen, 1824) . Istocheta macrocheta has always been considered as a synonym of Istocheta frontosa ( Bezzi & Stein 1907: 359, Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 155), never as a valid species. Bezzi & Stein (1907: 359) and Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993: 155) listed this nominal species as Istocheta macrochaeta ; O’Hara et al. (2011: 211) listed it as Istocheta macrocheta . We consider “ macrochaeta ” as an incorrect subsequent spelling. The type material for Istocheta macrocheta will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i.e., Istocheta frontosa .
