TYPE LOCALITY: “ in agro parmensi … praesertim in collibus … Foeminam in Pedemontio … et … marem a Veneto [Parmese territory … above all on hills … the female in Piedmont and the male from Veneto ( Italy)]” .

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Compsilura concinnata ( Meigen, 1824) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 171, O’Hara et al. 2020: 212).

REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 159) described both sexes of Machaerea serriventris without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths: “ in agro parmensis … praesertim in collibus … Foeminam in Pedemontio captam misit Pr. Bellardi et olim marem a Veneto Com. Contarini [Parmese territory … above all in the hills … Pr. Bellardi sent the female collected in Piedmont and Mr. Contarini formerly sent the male from Veneto]”. We found 15 syntypes in this study. Not included in the type series are an additional seven specimens: three in the MZUF numbered “1854” because their labels are yellowish rather than the greenish color of Rondani’s original handwritten ones and are in a lower row in the Box, for which reason we treat them to be subsequent additions; and four males in the MRSN from “ Piedmont ”, because it is not the male type locality. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name Machaeraea , which is an “incorrect original spelling of Macherea Rondani, 1859” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 109).
