Distribution. Western, Southern, and Eastern Europe, Russia (European part), Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Lebanon, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, * Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan.
Remarks. The subspecies P. ephippium dalanicus was described from Kazakhstan as just a dark form of P. ephippium but such a form is within the variability of this species. Similar forms occur in other parts of its range, even in Eastern Europe. Kurzenko even synonymized P. ephippium dalanicus by himself in his thesis manuscript in 1978.
