Subfamily Odostomiinae View in CoL Pelseneer
Remarks: Dall and Bartsch (1904) in the “synopsis of genera, subgenera and sections of the family Pyramidellidae ”, considered only four genera in the Pyramidellidae : Pyramidella Lamarck , Turbonilla Risso , Odostomia Fleming and Murchisonella Mörch ; this last one now considered in the Pyramidelloidea family Ebalidae . The other three genera were subdivided in numerous subgenera. Such classification is somewhat correspondent with that presented by Vaught (1989), who divided the Pyramidellidae in four subfamilies: Pyramidellinae , Turbonillinae , Odostomiinae and Cyclostremellinae .
All genera herein studied were included by Dall and Bartsch (1904) as subgenera of Odostomia and by Vaught (1989) in the subfamily Odostomiinae , in either generic or subgeneric level. The exception is Boonea , described after the work by Dall and Bartsch (1909), but considered by Wise (1996) in Odostomiinae .
Recently, Bouchet and Rocroi (2005) proposed a classification for gastropod families, in which the family Pyramidellidae encompasses four subfamilies: Pyramidellinae , Turbonillinae , Odostomiinae and Syrnoliinae. In this paper, we follow such classification.
Schander et al. (1999a) proposed an alternative scheme, in which the pyramidellids were split into four families: Pyramidellidae , Turbonillidae, Odostomiidae and Syrnoliidae, in an obvious correspondence to that by Bouchet and Rocroi (2005) but in elevated taxonomic categories. The Odostomidae was subdivided in Odostomiinae , Chrysallidinae, Odostomellinae and Cyclostremellinae . In the classification by Schander et al. (1999a), all genera herein studied were included in the family Odostomiidae , but in different subfamilies, Chrysallidinae ( Boonea , Chrysallida , Fargoa , Parthenina , Ivara , Mumiola and Trabecula ) or Odostomellinae ( Odostomella ).
Schander et al. (2003) included three species of Parthenina with Boonea seminuda ( C. B. Adams, 1839) in a phylogenetic analysis based on mtDNA sequences. These two genera were grouped along with Brachystomia Monterosato , Jordaniella Chaster , Liostomia G. O. S a r s, Spiralinella Chaster , Babella Dall & Bartsch and Egilina Dall & Bartsch in a clade named Liostomini. However, we have no guarantee that the other genera herein studied (e.g. Odostomella , Trabecula , Fargoa , Chrysallida , Ivara , Mumiola ) would group in the same clade if included in the phylogenetic analysis. For this reason, we do not use the name Liostomini, since we believe that additional studies on the phylogeny of Pyramidellidae , including a larger sample of taxa, are necessary for such classification changes.
