* Graphis capillacea Stirton (1879: 315) .
Type:— INDIA. Prope Chinsurah , on bark, Watt ( BM, not seen) .
Fig. 3G View FIGURE 3 .
Thallus corticolous, whitish or grayish, continuous, smooth, slightly glossy or dull. Lirellae immersed to erumpent, with a lateral thalline margin, elongate, straight, curved or sinuose, stellately branched, labia convergent or slightly divergent, entire, white pruinose along the slit, disc not or rarely visible from above, if visible, whitish pruinose ( scripta -, dendrogramma or caesiella -morph). Exciple laterally carbonized; hymenium clear; ascospores 8/ascus, hyaline, transversely septate, 5–9-septate, 18–34 × 6–8 μm, 7–9-septate, 28–40 × 7–9 μm (protologue).
Chemistry: salazinic acids (major to submajor), norstictic acid (major to trace), ± connorstictic acid (trace), ± subnorstictic acid (minor to trace), ± consalazinic acid (minor to trace, ± stictic acid (trace) (anal. J. Sutjaritturakan).
Distribution and habitat:—Described from India (type) and here reported for Thailand for the first time. Graphis capillacea is growing in open situations on the bark of various trees ( Durio zibethinus , Dracaena sanderiana , Callistemon lanceolatus , Alstonia scholaris ) from 20– 190 m.
Remarks:— Awasthi & Singh (1976: 36), who investigated the type, presented line drawings of the lirellae and a very precise description. Further information is given in Awasthi (1991). Distinctive is the rare chemistry, i. e. salazinic acid (always present as a major or submajor substance) together with norstictic acid in various concentrations.
Material from Thailand examined:— Chumphon province: Lang Suan district, tambon Wang Tako, surroundings of Moo 13, in a durian plantation ( Durio zibethinus ), 190 m, 09°55’54’’ N, 99°02’30’’ E, 14 June 2008, J. Sutjaritturakan 1103 (hb. K. & J. Kalb 42277); Tha Sae district, in the area of tambon Tha Sae, in a lucky bamboo plantation ( Dracaena sanderiana ), 20 m, 10°31’25’’ N, 99°02’04’’ E, 7 June 2008, J. Sutjaritturakan 747 (hb. K. & J. Kalb 42272); Tha Sae district, in the area of tambon Tha Sae, in a bottlebrush plantation ( Callistemon lanceolatus ), 20 m, 10°31’25’’ N, 99°02’04’’ E, 7 June 2008, J. Sutjaritturakan 766.1 (hb. K. & J. Kalb 42272); Tha Sae district, in the area of tambon Tha Sae, in a blackboard tree plantation ( Alstonia scholaris ), 20 m, 10°31’25’’ N, 99°02’04’’ E, 7 June 2008, J.
