Mycobank MB 827643
Similar to Graphis bungartzii Bárcenas-Peña et al. (2014: 71) , but differs in having immersed (to slightly erumpent), usually unbranched lirellae which are separated from the thallus by a gap (lirellae erumpent and richly branched in G. bungartzii ) and smaller, less septate ascospores (25–38 × 5–8 μm, 5–11-septate in G. bungartzii ).
Type:— THAILAND. Ratchaburi province: Suan Phueng district, tambon Suan Phueng , trail to Khao Jone Waterfall , bamboo scrub with scattered deciduous trees along a creek, ca. 220 m, 13°31’31’’ N, 99°14’24’’ E, 11 December 2015, J. Sutjaritturakan & K. Kalb 41325 ( RAMK, holotype) GoogleMaps .
Etymology:—The specific epithet refers to the name of the locality where this species was collected.
Thallus corticolous, dark lead gray, up to 5 cm diam., ca. 120 μm thick, continuous, corticate, prothallus indistinct, surface smooth, dull. Thallus in section with thin upper cortex, up to 10 μm high, with irregular algal layer up to 50 μm high, medulla and partly algal layer filled with large clusters of crystals. Lirellae immersed (to slightly erumpent) with lateral thalline margin, separated from thallus by a gap, short, up to 3 mm long and ca. 0.2 mm wide, 0.15 mm high, straight, curved or sinuous, usually unbranched, very scarcely trifurcately branched, labia convergent, striate, black, not pruinose, disc concealed, not visible from above (tenella- - morph). Exciple laterally carbonized, 20–30 μm wide; hypothecium 5–10 μm high, ± hyaline or light-brown; hymenium 70–100 μm high, clear, epihymenium indistinct or light-brown. Paraphyses unbranched; asci elongate claviform, ca. 65–90 × 10–18 μm. Ascospores 8/ascus, hyaline, transversely 7–8-septate, 15–25 × 6–7 μm, with a halo up to 2 μm thick, I+ blue.
Chemistry: norstictic acid (major) (anal. K. Kalb).
Distribution and habitat:—The new species is so far only known from the type locality where it was growing on bark of an unidentified deciduous tree in a bamboo scrub along a creek at ca. 220 m elevation.
Remarks:—On a world basis, only two Graphis species are known with striate labia, a laterally carbonized exciple, a clear hymenium, small, transseptate ascospores and producing norstictic acid, viz. G. elegans (Sm.) Ach. and G. bungartzii . The first one is separated in having erumpent to prominent lirellae lacking a thalline margin, for the differences to the second one see above.
