Digonocryptus niger ( Szépligeti, 1916) View in CoL

Figs 87, 88, 113, 114, 142, 156, 200, 240

Stenarella nigra Szépligeti, 1916:320 . ♀ Description, keyed. Holotype HNHM.

Digonocryptus niger: Townes and Townes, 1966:127 View in CoL . Generic transfer.

Digonocryptus niger: Yu and Horstmann, 1998:241 View in CoL . Listed.

Description. FEMALE. Fore wing 11.9 mm.

Head. Ventral tooth of mandible approximately as long as dorsal tooth. Clypeus apical area delimited by smooth border; clypeal margin with two weak teeth. Antenna beyond flagellomere IV missing.

Mesosoma . Mesopleuron with scarce short hairs, 99% of cuticular surface visible; weakly and only partially striate. Subalar prominence narrow and more or less elongate, not keeled. Sulcus between sternaulus and scrobe very weak, visible with tangent illumination only. Posterior transverse carina of mesosternum absent. Lower metapleuron finely striate-rugulose. Propodeum: area in front of anterior transverse carina polished, smooth, medially with traces of two ridges from carina towards anterior margin. Propodeal apophyses conspicuous, higher than wide, somewhat compressed, oblong in cross-section. Posterior transverse carina absent. Area between transverse carinae and apophyses obliquely striate-rugose; area behind posterior transverse carina transversely striate-rugose. Fore wing in Fig. 200; vein 3-Cu 1.35 length of 4-Cu. Hind wing in Fig. 240.

Metasoma. Postpetiole dorsally, at level of spiracles, weakly but distinctly concave, forming shallow depression; dorsolateral and median dorsal carinae absent; petiolar spiracles in dorsal view not prominent. Ovipositor 1.29 length of hind tibia. Apex of lower valve with 15 teeth.

Color. Dark brown with brownish yellow coxae and yellowish marks. Lateral pattern as in Fig. 87. Eye margin at 9 h with yellow spot, between 10–12 h with narrow yellow stripe, between 1–2 h with very narrow, linear yellow mark. Labrum yellow. Head otherwise dark brown. Mesosoma dorsally, including propodeum, dark brown with light reddish tone, except mesonotum entirely dark brown. Propodeum as in Figs 87–88. Mid and hind coxa bright brownish yellow. All femora and mid tibia brown, fore tibia light brown with lateral face white; hind tibia dark brown; fore tarsus brown, lighter basally; mid t1 basal 0.3 and apex, and entire t2–5 brown, t1 centrally whitish; hind t1 basal 0.4, t4 apical half and entire t5 dark brown, t1 apical 0.6, entire t2–3, and basal half of t4 whitish. Metasoma dorsally brown, except T1 somewhat lighter, with reddish tone; apical whitish stripes ( Fig. 87) widely interrupted and mostly not visible dorsally.

Morphological variation. Axillar carina anteriorly, where it meets mesoscutum, more angled on the holotype ( Fig. 156) than in the specimen from Colombia .

MALE. Unknown.

Comments. The color pattern is unique and characteristic for the species, particularly the mid and hind coxae dark yellow contrasting with the body almost entirely dark brown ( Fig. 142).

Material examined. HOLOTYPE of Stenarella nigra (HNHM) , extended focus pictures only ( Figs 156, 113, 114). Other : ♀ “Mt.Redondo// 1400m Colombia // II.23.1951// ThruWalz.”; “ Digonocryptus // sp 4” ( AEIC). Right wings slide mounted; antenna beyond flagellomere IV missing, metasoma medio-laterally squeezed.

Distribution. Venezuela, Colombia NR.
